Gasherbrum III (7,952 m) is a prominent summit of the Gasherbrum massif located in the Baltoro Muztagh subrange of the Karakoram, on the border between Pakistan’s Baltistan region and Xinjiang, China. The peak lies between Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum IV, forming part of one of the most spectacular high-altitude mountain clusters in the world.
Although extremely high, Gasherbrum III does not meet the 500-meter topographic prominence requirement to be classified as a completely independent mountain and is therefore generally considered a subsidiary peak of Gasherbrum II.
The mountain remained among the world’s highest unclimbed summits until 1975, when a Polish expedition completed the first ascent. The team included Wanda Rutkiewicz, Alison Chadwick-Onyszkiewicz, Janusz Onyszkiewicz, and Krzysztof Zdzitowiecki, marking an important milestone in high-altitude mountaineering history.
