Gasherbrum I Expedition (8068 m)

Detail

Gasherbrum I, also known as Hidden Peak, is one of the 8000+ meter giants of the Karakoram, located near K2 and Gasherbrum II in the Concordia region. The first climbing route was closed since the mid-1980s due to the Siachen conflict, but today the mountain is most commonly climbed via the Gasherbrum La, leading to the Japanese Culvert or along the North Ridge. An alternate West Ridge route exists, technically easier but longer due to the distance between Camp I and the summit.

Climbers face technical difficulties on the lower slopes, while higher snow faces pose avalanche hazards after fresh snowfalls. Despite its height, Gasherbrum I is considered one of the more achievable 8000m peaks, offering a classic mountaineering experience comparable to Cho Oyu, with a trek to base camp described as one of the most spectacular in the world.

The standard ascent involves negotiating the heavily crevassed Gasherbrum Glacier, climbing the South-West Ridge snow face, and crossing mixed ice and snow ridges. After reaching the Banana Ridge, climbers establish Camp 2, then tackle a series of ice pitches up to the shoulder at Camp 3 (7490m). From there, a diagonal traverse leads to the base of the summit pyramid on the East Ridge, followed by a final climb across wide-open snow expanses and some steep sections to the narrow summit ridge, rewarded by breathtaking panoramic views of the Karakoram.
